Social Investing Network Covestor Raises $6.5M from Union Square, Spark [Silicon Alley Insider]

covestor-logo.gifCovestor, the London/NYC-based site that lets amateur stockpickers show off their portfolios, has raised a $6.5M Series A. Union Square Ventures and Spark Capital led the round, joined by Amadeus Capital PArtners. Todd Dagres of Spark and Albert Wenger of USV join the board.

Betaworks, the holding company which had put seed money into the business along with Howard Lindzon and others, doesn't appear is re-upping in this round.

Not a huge surprise to see USV backing the company: Fred Wilson has been an early fan, (and a struggling speculator).

Facebook Settles ConnectU Founder Lawsuit [Silicon Alley Insider]

connectu.jpegFacebook has reached a settlement with the brothers Winklevoss, who allege that Mark Zuckerberg ripped off their idea for a college-based social network, the NYT reports. No terms disclosed.

The brothers didn't appear to have the strongest of cases last summer. And given that the case has already led to an embarassing depantsing of Zuck, via the release of trial depositions, and a fruitless attempt by Facebook to quash their release, it's hard to argue that Facebook has much incentive to make this go away now. If the twins made enough to cover their legal fees, we'll be impressed.

The Emperor’s New Clothes - Sinead O’Connor

I think she is one of the most underestimated artists of our time. This is an older song but her stuff in recent years is amazing too.

Quote du Jour: Vonnegut [Paul Kedrosky's Infectious Greed]

From the intro to Armageddon in Retrospect, the first collection of previously unpublished works by author Kurt Vonnegut since his death:

The unhappiest times in his life were those months and sometimes a whole year when he couldn't write, when he was "blocked." He'd try just about anything to get unblocked, but he was very nervous and suspicious about psychiatry. In my early-to-mid-twenties he let it slip that he was afraid that therapy might make him normal and well adjusted, and that would be the end of his writing. I tried to reassure him that psychiatrists weren't nearly that good.

Another Airline Deal Crashes [PE HUB]

Are you holding tickets to fly on a private equity-owned airline? May I suggest a train or automobile? ATA Airlines today canceled all current and future flights, after filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. If that sounds familiar, it might be because Aloha Airlines did the exact same thing earlier this week. In fact, the two cases [...]

My Doorbell - Jack Johnson

There are only a few songs by the White Stripes that I like and “My Doorbell” is my favorite. The drum beat in the original is killer. I like this cover version a lot too.
